The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
