Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
